“When we hit the water I couldn’t believe what was happening. My husband had been napping in the passenger seat and was jolted awake to me screaming that we were in the water. Once the car finally stopped it bobbed a little and the front end started sinking.
The water was almost at the windows which no longer worked nor did the sunroof.
My husband and I had no idea how deep the slough was or if anyone had seen us go in. We just needed to get our son and get out. We had seen a segment with Dr.Geisbrecht and the resqme window punch on the CBC’s Rick Mercer Report and did our best to recall what to do. We didn’t waste time trying to open the doors or calling 911.
We made a plan to get our son. I pushed the luggage that flew up to the front on impact out of the way while my husband reached over the passenger seat to undo our son’s carseat belt. While he was undoing our son, I used our resqme window punch to smash my driver side window. Water started coming in through my window and the front end started sinking faster. There was too much luggage and glass to pull our son through my window so I swam around to the passenger side to help my husband get our son out. My husband used the resqme to punch out his window but not before covering our son in a blanket and punching the rear passenger window as well. My husband got out and then pulled our son out. We swam to shore with the assistance of some good samaritans who jumped in to help us. By the end of it the car was partially submerged with front end completely submerged. I have nightmares when I think about how the scenario could have played out if we did not have our resqme. Preventing accidents is priority – Being prepared in the event of an accident can make all the difference. Thank you for this inexpensive, effective and life-saving tool.”
Natalie ends her story with these words for the resqme team: ” It has been embarrassing airing my mistake, but worth it if it can help someone else. There are no words to express my gratitude for your kindness and support. You have helped turned this traumatizing event into something positive.” Natalie Millar
