1. License suspension.
Each state has its own rules about the length of the suspension, but this will hugely impact your everyday life and take away part of your autonomy to drive anywhere.
2. Fines and interlock ignition device
Fines and costs can range from $500-$2,000 or more, depending on the state, even for a first offense. Additionally, you may also be required to install an ignition interlock device. Consequently, to start the car, blowing in the system is required to ensure no drinks have been consumed before getting behind the wheel.
3. Imprisonment
Depends on which state you live in. The sentence could go up to several months depending on aggravating factors and if it is a first-time offense or not. Indeed, this is a big one to think about when deciding if it is worth it or not to have that extra drink. Unfortunately, an ephemeral moment of fun can lead to a lifetime of trouble.
4. Treatment and education
The judge may require that you attend alcohol abuse treatment or education programs. Often, the program can last for several months in addition to a license suspension.
5. Community service
A combination of community service, substance abuse treatment and restitution for victims is pretty common.
6. Insurance consequences
The insurance company may take away any safe driver discounts and consider you a high-risk driver and ask for higher rates. This will impact your budget and ability to put money into projects that matter to you.
7. Impact on employment
Getting a DUI will likely have an impact on how your co-workers see you and may affect your relationship with them.
8. Scholarship program
A scholarship can be denied or revoked if students have a DUI conviction on their records. Moreover, many schools do not accept applicants who drove while intoxicated.
Make the right choice! If you drink, don’t drive!
