Spooky season is here, but there’s no need to be scared. Follow these simple Halloween safety steps for some peace of mind this year!
Location
This seems like an obvious one, but make sure to choose a safe location for trick or treating! Find a well-trafficked neighborhood that you trust, and make sure to scout it out on the way there to make sure you still think it’s a good option.
While walking around, stick to well-lit areas and stay on the sidewalk to avoid any collisions with overwhelmed drivers.
Candy checks
We all know of this one, but we couldn’t write a Halloween Safety guide without it. Check the candy you receive before digging in. And of course, while eating it, if anything tastes a bit strange, err on the side of caution and reach for a new treat instead.
If you really want to play it safe with kids, you can always let them trick or treat to gather their candy, and then sneakily replace it with some fresh candy mix you can get at the store.
Bright costumes
With so many people running around in colorful outfits, it can be difficult to find your group. When planning out costume ideas, consider incorporating bright colors and unique elements that help you stand out. If it’s too late to change your outfit, add on some glow sticks, especially a great idea for kids, to easily find others in your group if you ever get separated. And who doesn’t want some fun glow-in-the-dark additions to their look!
Tracking
At times like this, take advantage of all the technology we have! Before going out, consider sharing your location with friends and asking for them to share it with you as well. That way, if anyone gets lost, you can easily navigate towards one another without having to deal with finding each other in large crowds.
With kids who might not have phones yet, consider adding an Apple AirTag to their trick-or-treating bags or attaching it to their costumes. So if you ever lose sight of them, you can make sure they’re nearby by tracking them though your phone!
Buddy system
The trusted buddy system is a great way of staying safe in busy environments, and it absolutely applies to Halloween events! Whether you’re in a small or large group, split up into pairs and make sure your “buddy” is always around. You’ll always have someone holding you accountable, and it eases the process so just one person is not looking out for the whole group. And if you do choose to split off from the group, make sure to take your buddy along with you!
If you’re going trick-or-treating with a large group of kids, add in periodic “buddy” checks to make sure everyone is safe and accounted for.
Preparation
Regardless of all these steps for safety, life happens and you may find yourself in an emergency situation. But if you have the right tools, you can get to safety and enjoy the rest of your night.
In such large crowds at night, having the defendme® on hand can be a lifesaver! If you feel scared and need to quickly grab people’s attention, simply tug on the string to activate the loud alarm. You can also carry a backup flashlight, in case your phone battery dies and you need to light the way in a darker area. The prepareme® is an easy-to-use crank flashlight that you can rely on at all times!
Now that you have all these tips, you should be ready for a fun night of trick-or-treating and celebrating without any hiccups! Have a spooktacular Halloween, and of course, always remember to stay safe!
