Kids in hot cars

Summertime is here! June 21st marked the beginning of the summer with the return of the sun, blue sky, and warm weather. You may not know it but in Santa Barbara, it feels like our summer starts a little later because we experience “June gloom.” During most of the month, clouds fill the sky and temperatures stay pretty much around 70 F. It gives us a good reason to really appreciate the hot summer days!

Unfortunately, with heat comes certain dangers and if you often drive with your kids, make sure to never leave them in your car on a hot day, even if you think it is only for a few minutes. It is important to be aware that a car’s interior temperature can rise approximately 40 degrees within one hour, even when the exterior temperature is only 72°F. (1)

Regularly, kids die from heat stroke after being left behind for a while or simply forgotten. According to our partners Kids and Cars, 52 kids died of heat stroke after being left behind in 2018. Sadly, this year, we are already at 17 deaths so far.(2)

It is unfortunately possible for parents to forget their kids in the car. Going with the flow of the day and following their routine, parents go to work or to their usual occupation, forgetting that the child is even in the car with them. “Forgotten baby syndrome” is not a negligence problem, but a memory problem, says David Diamond, Ph.D, a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida. “The most common response is that only bad or negligent parents forget kids in cars,” Diamond says. In reality, “It’s a matter of circumstances. It can happen to everyone.” (3)

To prevent such tragedy, make sure to always looks at the back seat when exiting your car and check out the Look before you lock tips list by Kids and Cars here: https://www.kidsandcars.org/how-kids-get-hurt/heat-stroke/

They also designed the Kars 4 Kids Safety app to alert drivers when they leave their cars to remember there is a baby in the backseat (https://www.kars4kids.org/safety-app/) .

By spreading awareness, we can help reducing the number of child’s death related to hot cars. Drive safe this summer!

Resqme, Inc. is proud to collaborate with Rescue 42 for the release of The Ripper Laminated Glass Cutter. Driven by the same mission, Resqme and Rescue 42 strive to make the most efficient, safe and reliable tools for vehicle rescue situations.

Both companies have been in the automotive safety industry for over 20 years. Rescue 42 was founded in 1995. Resqme, Inc. launched in 1998, introducing the original resqme® car escape keychain. Resqme and Rescue 42 are now joining forces to make sure First Responders, EMT, Police and Fire Fighters can work as fast as possible when it comes to vehicle extrication and saving lives.

In response to the recent passing of FMVSS 226, Rescue 42 recently launched The Ripper, a critical life-saving tool that cuts and removes laminated glass side windows in less than ten seconds. The Ripper also incorporates a resqme® car escape tool with a fastened clip to ensure quickness on the field in the event that the vehicle has tempered glass side windows instead of laminated side windows.

If a person is trapped in their vehicle for whatever reason, First Responders now have in their hands the perfect tool for a quick, efficient action, and saving precious seconds and lives. This is a great combination since The Ripper™ is designed to cut through laminated side windows while the resqme® is primarily designed to cut jammed seatbelts and break tempered glass windows. The resqme® blade is also able to cut the tether of a deployed side airbag, so it does not cause obstruction during extrication.

It is such a pleasure for us to partner with a company who shares similar values and has made their mission to create the best safety tools.

Together, we can save more lives!

1. Lights malfunction

You were taking your time on your way home and all of sudden, you see the police car behind you. Don’t panic, it is probably a routine control. A light malfunction is very common, and sometimes we are not even aware that one of our lights is broken. If you are driving at night, in the fog or rain, not realizing your rear light is out, you may get pulled over. Time to get it fixed and take a trip to the mechanic!

2. Speeding

Okay so maybe you are in a hurry and you are hitting the gas a little too hard. But guess what? Speeding is dangerous especially if you constantly switch from lane to lane to pass other drivers. Being late for that so important meeting is better than ending at the hospital or worse. Be responsible and don’t endanger others.

3. Texting and driving

Bad choice. The person who texted you can certainly wait until you get home to receive an answer. It is funny how we feel the urge to look at our phone and answer right away after hearing the notification bell. Unfortunately, so many lives were lost due to texting and driving. According to the NHTSA, distracted driving claimed 3,166 lives in 2017 alone (1) …You know better than this! Pay attention to the road and don’t text and drive!

4. Drunk driving

Here my friend you have made a very bad decision when you decided to get behind the wheel after having one too many alcoholic beverages. You are not only being a danger to yourself but also to other drivers and the passengers of your car. Remember that driving with even a slight buzz is reprehensible and that your capacities and reflexes are impacted. You may get home safely but you can also end up spending the night in jail or worse yet, at the hospital. Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes—that’s one person every 48 minutes in 2017, according to the NHTSA (2). Don’t be one of them!

5. Bad luck

You were driving nicely being a real civil person, being courteous but that didn’t prevent you from hearing that disturbing and stressful siren behind you. Stay calm, be polite and you’ll soon be on your way!

1. Be aware of your surroundings

When walking in the streets, make sure you are alert and fully aware of your surroundings. Try not to scroll on your phone while walking as it distracts you from your environment and make sure you are fully focused and aware on what is going on around you. Being alert will help you react quickly in case of emergency. Also try to change up your typical route, as someone may have noticed you taking the same path over a certain period.

2. Let you family know by what time you will be back

If living with your family or significant other, make sure they know what your plans for the evening are and with whom you are going out. Are you going out with longtime friends, a date, or coworkers? Fill them in on what your plans for the evening are and let them know by what time you think you will be back so they can take immediate action if they don’t hear from you.

3. Carry a personal safety alarm or pepper spray

It is always a good option to carry a personal safety alarm or a pepper spray to be able to protect yourself if ever attacked. Thanks to its loud siren, a portable alarm will quickly attract attention if you are under attack, while pepper spray will allow you to defend yourself if someone tries to harm you. Do a few rounds of practice occasionally to get comfortable using such devices and to be fully prepared in case of emergency.

4. Let your friends, coworker know how you are getting home

If leaving an office function or a party with friends, be vocal about how you are getting home. Are you just walking or are you taking public transportation, a cab, or an Uber? Letting your entourage know about this (plus assuring them that you will text them once safe at home) will help them notice if anything is wrong.

5. Trust your instincts

If you feel like you are getting some insistent looks or unwanted attention and start feeling uncomfortable or unsafe, don’t hesitate to change route or turn around to a more crowded area. You will then be able to ask for assistance if needed. If you feel like something weird is going on or if someone is following you, don’t hesitate to ask for help to bystanders or call for help. Better be safe than sorry!

5 tips when running alone

1. Listen to music at a reasonable volume

When people run, they tend to blast the music to get an extra kick out of their session. Listening to your favorite tune is fun, especially as you can synchronize your pace to the rhythm of the beat and feel like you are almost flying (no exaggeration?). BUT, it can also get you in trouble. If the volume is too loud, it makes it harder for you to hear what is going on around you in terms of traffic for one but also in terms of a potential treat. Make sure you can react fast by turning the volume to a reasonable level!

2. Carry a personal safety alarm

Carrying things can be annoying when running but some of them are necessary. As more and more attacks on female runners are being reported, gear yourself with a portable personal safety alarm that can easily attach to your clothes or on your keyset (Did you say defendme? ?). This kind of tool will come handy in case of unwanted attention and equipped with a loud siren, they will scare off a potential attacker. As we say at resqme, “be heard, stay safe!”.

3. Be aware of your surroundings

It is probably best not to go for your run too late at night, so you can have maximum visibility on what is going on around you. Always remember to dedicate enough attention to the people around you so you can spot quickly if someone has ill intentions and if you need to ask for help to bystanders.

4. Tell your family/significant others where you plan to run

Always good to tell your family or friends which path you are going to take and how long your run usually lasts. This way your loved ones will make sure to react fast, should something unusual occur. There is also a variety of apps out there that will allow them to track your run in real time, check-in on you and make sure you are safe.

5. Enjoy your run

Of course, it is important to be careful and plan for a potential emergency but don’t forget to enjoy your run without worrying constantly! Take some time to appreciate the beauty of the landscape and the shining sun (if like us, you live in beautiful Santa Barbara, although we are aware that sun is not exclusive to our city ?) and get the most out of your session. You got this!

All right so 2019 is here! Happy New Year everyone! Here are 5 things to become a better car owner this year 🙂 :

1. Keep my car clean

It is true that one can find many excuses not to keep its car in the best possible condition. “The weather is gross, so my car will get dirty again soon”, “I have a busy week”, or “I am simply too tired”. But the truth is that your car will last longer if you choose to take care of it like a newborn baby. Some people are so in love with their car that they clean it every weekend and while the neighbors may make fun of them, it is the right thing to do (OK maybe not EVERY weekend).

 2. Check the tire pressure

This is a big one and people don’t realize how important it is to check this especially if commuting a lot. A tire that doesn’t have the proper pressure is an unnecessary hazard and can quickly and unexpectedly put you and your family at risk. Nowadays it is easy to buy electronic devices to check this by yourself, when the tires are cold, just before hitting the road.

3. Have the right tools to change a tire

Last time I blew a tire, it was in the middle of the desert and it happened around noon, with the burning sun looking at the scene. It was also on an uphill road and it seemed like a good time and place to painfully realize that my scissor jack wasn’t adequate at all. After half an hour in the sun, a Good Samaritan finally came to the rescue. Let me tell you that as soon as I made it to my destination I ordered something more convenient to prevent being stranded again. Also, be aware that many new cars don’t have a spare tire anymore. In that case, it is wise to arm yourself with an anti-puncture spray that will make you able to drive to the next mechanic. A good option is also to call for road assistance while making sure you wait in a safe spot if you are on the freeway.

4. Learn how to check the oil

The health of your engine depends on it and it is in fact pretty simple to check the oil level. Simply locate the dipstick in your engine block. Pull it off, wipe the oil off, and then put it back in to remove it once again. Now check the small indication levels to see how far the oil run in the dipstick. If the oil is below the minimum mark, it is time to add some. You did it!

5. Stop eating/drinking in it

Ok so it is the morning and I finish my breakfast while commuting to work but by the end of each week, the number of bacteria and trash in my car is record breaking. Occasionally, I spill coffee on the seats (and on myself) while using the brake unexpectedly. Do yourself and your car a favor and get up five minute earlier to eat at home. Not to mention that eating or drinking in your vehicle is taking your attention away from the road and is dangerous.

Ah the Holiday season… that special time of the year to gather with family and friends and enjoy being together. The streets fill up with shiny decorations, people are in a good mood and the kids (and adults for that matter) have their eyes on the store fronts, hoping that Santa will bring them that oh so desired present, wrapped in glittery paper. It is the time of the tree, the stocking stuffers, your neighbors decorating their garden and their kids building a snowman outside with branches and carrots (unless you live in Santa Barbara like us). The best part though is that everywhere you go, the stores will play the same old Christmas songs at least 30 times to make sure the lyrics are imprinted in your brain until next year.

It is also the time to be thankful for what we have and for the people in our lives. Family and friends are precious, and the Holiday season is a nice reminder to not take it all for granted and enjoy quality time with our loved ones.

Unfortunately, It is a shame that this fun period is also linked to an increase in traffic accidents and car crash fatalities increase by 25 percent compared to the rest of the year. Over the past 5 years, an average of 300 people died in drunk-driving crashes during the Christmas through New Year’s holiday period. In December 2016 alone, 781 people lost their lives in drunk-driving crashes according to NHTSA[1].

As much fun and excitement that the Holiday Season is, it is important to always remember to be responsible. In order to keep celebrating being together for the many years to come, let’s not take the wheel after drinking and always be conscious of our surroundings while on the road.

From the resqme team, may you and your family have a safe Holiday Season!

Ah, taking a family trip! Away from work, it is time to get ready for some fun and relax while heading to your vacation home. But is it really? Here is a top 5 of things to expect when driving with your kids.

1. Frequent bathroom stops

It has been only 80 miles, but you already had to stop 3 times. First the kids threatened to mess up the seats if you did not pull over immediately. Then, the dog started to show signs of difficulty to hold his bladder. Finally, when, you thought you were on your way to pass 25 miles without any further stops, you realized that drinking this large soy latte wasn’t such a good idea…

2. Dispute about what music to put on

While you wouldn’t mind listening to a good old classic rock album, your kids are definitely not receptive to the subtle riffs of the Doobie Brothers or the Eagles. Instead you must comply and alternate between teenage hits radio songs and the theme of Dora the Explorer that your 4 years old requests to be played every 15 min.  This trip will probably be longer than you thought.

3. The “Is it far?” recurring question

Unless they are taking a nap to give you a breather, your kids are keen on pointing out that this trip is taking waaay too long and that you guys should be there already. Is it a bit stressful especially when you only left an hour ago and that there are 3 more to go. But between you and us, if you are being honest, how far is it really?

4. Possible travel sickness

This new ride that you just got looks great! And what about these beautiful leather seats? Maybe it would have been a good idea to protect them with a blanket though, you come to realize as you are cleaning up little Tom’s breakfast nicely spread all over the backseats.

5. A lot of fun

All right, so even if you must deal with all this, traveling with family is a great occasion to have a lot of fun and enjoy each other’s company. Discovering new places, looking at the landscape, laughing a lot and just spending time with your loved ones, you know you are a lucky person ?

Good luck to you on your next family trip!

It is always a great reward for us when someone shares their story about how resqme helped save a life. We at resqme, Inc. are committed to increase safety for all drivers and passengers, and knowing that our products contributed to help a person in distress is making us proud.

This week, we received the testimonial of Jack, who experienced a life-threatening situation when his car got submerged and he found himself trapped in it, upside down and head under the water.

At 2am on a Saturday night, Jack was on his way back home from a friend’s house when a deer jumped in front of his car. To avoid hitting the deer, Jack had to quickly swing his car away which caused his vehicle to flip and roll into the water of a nearby pond. In the dark, and with his head under the water, Jack was in state of shock and panicked. He was able to quickly remove his seat belt and tried to break the side window with his elbow, but his attempts were unsuccessful. That is when he was able to spot his orange resqme keychain dangling from his keys. “I bought this tool a year and a half prior.” he said. He quickly pulled the resqme off his keychain and pressed the tool against the window which instantly shattered, enabling him to quickly escape the car and get to safety.

Jack sent us the following message: “Thank God for this. I may have not been alive to write this. I can’t express my gratitude. Thank you.”

When a vehicle gets submerged it only takes few minutes before the car sinks, so it is important to remain calm and act fast.

Here are the 3 lifesaving steps as described by Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, in case your car is sinking:

1 – SEAT BELTS – off or cut them

2 – WINDOWS – down or break them

3 – OUT – if Kids, from the oldest to the youngest

Thankfully, Jack had the right reaction and the right tool available within reach and was able to save his own life. Jack sustained no injuries from the car crash even if he remains a little shaken by the event. We wish him a quick recovery and hope he will be able to get back to his routine shortly.

As the summer is almost ending, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the firefighters who had a very busy last few months, especially here in California as no less than 4,587 fires raged since January1.

Last December, the Thomas fire clouded the sky as it burned more than 281,893 acres of land and destroyed 1,063 structures2. Countless families in the Santa Barbara and Ventura counties had to be evacuated and many lost their homes. It took an excruciating 7 weeks to contain with an estimated $2.2 billion of damages.

Nature only had a few weeks of rest as the Carr fire soon began to follow. As we are writing these lines, it was finally declared contained after 39 days and 8 fatalities. It destroyed 1,079 homes and reduced 229,651 acres to ashes in the Shasta and Trinity counties3. It also has the sad distinction of being officially recognized as the 7th most important fire in California’s history.

Our communities and environment have been shattered and it will be a long road to full recovery. But we must be aware that as devastating as it was, it could have been a lot worse without the incredible efforts of the firefighters and first responders. Firefighters from Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Washington and Arizona also joined forces with Californian firefighters to fight the flames. Some of these people lost their lives to allow us to continue ours.

From the bottom of our heart, to all the firefighters, first responders and volunteers who fought so bravely to protect our homes, community and forests, Thank you!

As a safety company, we care about your wellbeing and we have at heart to accompany you in emergency situations. As a reminder, here are the most important steps to follow when being under evacuation order in our blog article “Wildfires: how to evacuate”

How to travel with your dog

America’s love for dogs is getting stronger and stronger. In 2017, there were 89.7 million dogs living in household as pets. Our furry companions make life more joyful. Now that summer is approaching it is time to plan your next road trip with your best friend! With a little bit of planning, patience and a lot of love, your vacation will go smoothly!

Before leaving

  • Check with the vet. Since he knows Fido good enough and holds his medical record, he’s the best person to talk to about your plans. You can also consider purchasing an identification microchip for your pet before a road trip. These chips are embedded beneath your dog or cat’s skin and provide your contact information. If Fido does run off, the chances of getting him back will be higher. While you’re at the vet, it is also a good idea to get a record of any vaccinations your pet has received, and any medication that might be needed for the trip.
  • Get the right equipment. The two best ways to travel with your pet inside of your car are with harnesses and crates. Check out this list of top performing harness for your dog here.
  • Few weeks before the big trip, start taking your pet on short car rides. This way, you can try out your travel equipment and see how great your dog is doing in a moving car.
  • Plan wisely your itinerary by looking for dog-friendly-stops. You can use com, a road trip planner that will list all of the dog-friendly hotels, campgrounds, restaurant, activities and more. They also list beaches and off-leashes parks, veterinarians and pet supply stores. Just to give you an idea, experts suggest stopping every two hours to let your pet walk around and relieve itself. Best way to prevent pet accidents and discomfort!
  • Pack his belongings! Collar, leash, food, water, bowls, medications, blankets and pillows. Everything to make him feel safe.

+ If you were looking for a pet-friendly new ride, check out the best cars for dogs.

Why is it important to restrain your dog in the car

Unrestrained pets can become missiles, injuring you or your passengers. An 80-pound pet colliding with your seat at 30 mph exerts 2,400 pounds of force. Unrestrained pets can also be ejected into traffic, endangering themselves and other motorists.

On the road

  • Some dogs get very excited to be in the car. You know, the jowls and ears flapping in the breeze kind of happiness. Right before hitting the road, take him on a nice walk to relax him.
  • Make him feel comfortable and safe. To do so, make sure that his harness is tighten and fits properly.

  • Act like usual. Do not use the sad nor apological voice. Stay positive and calm.
  • Turn off power windows!
  • Try to stop ~ every 2 hours. When stopping, always keep an eye on him and never leave him unattended inside of your car. Many dogs die each year because of heatstroke. More and more places are making it illegal to leave a pet in a hot car. If you leave your pet inside you might come back to a car with a broken window, no pet, and a police officer with handcuffs waiting for you!
  • Give him snacks that are high in proteins.

Enjoy your trip ?

Meet our team: Patricia

A German in New York

We are thrilled to introduce Patricia, our international sales manager. Originally from Germany, she moved to New York ten years ago. “I got a scholarship for track and field. The university recruited me for running.” Because spots are in her DNA: “I started running when I was 18.” She was a semi-professional in Germany there and this tells a lot about her personality. She’s very energetic, and a funny person. Which is valuable when you work in sales because a good energy is key to a good communication and building trust: “I have developed great relationships with some of our customers.” Yes. you’ll often hear her talking about soccer games with some of them.

Patricia in Potsdam

Creating opportunities

Within the past two years, Patricia has opened many doors. “I moved from NYC to Santa Barbara two years ago to work at resqme. Inc. My work is about maintaining our current business relationships with our existing customers and creating new business opportunities.” To do so, she’s often at tradeshows and makes cold calls on an everyday basis. Moving here also brought a new hobby to her life. She started training for Triathlons, which involves swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. “Mens sana in corpore sano” – “A healthy mind in a healthy body”, is her motto. “Triathlon helped me developed my skills and my awareness. It is tough. You have to deal with obstacles” she says. This meaningful relationship with sports brought more than a routine to her life. “During a race, you do not stop because it hurts. You keep going.” Just like you would do in life! She says that being able to set up goals, focus on them and get there has “so much in common with my job too.”

A product you can trust

What is it like to work for resqme, Inc.? Celebrating two years in the company, Patricia has become an ambassador for the product she believes in. Our car escape tool, the resqme, is carried by more than 4 million drivers worldwide: “the resqme car escape tool saves lives, we save lives with this product, it’s a gracious and amazing circle. The trust that people put into us is so rewarding. I feel that we have a life deal with everyone we sell the tool to.”

At resqme, we are building a community of people who care for each other.

At resqme, Inc., we like to say that we are more than just a company. It is also true with the people who buy our tools, who are more than just customers. We are all building a community of people who care for each other. This enthusiasm for our line of safety products also brings some challenges: “Because the product is so great, we are getting more and more interest and every customer is a priority in its own way.” As she focuses on the Business 2 Business relationships, Patricia also sees an increase of requests from promotional agencies or through bids. “With an imprint on it, the resqme is the right tool to promote safety values! We had orders from the NASA or UNICEF, it is so rewarding to see these big companies or agencies putting their logo on our tools!”

Ready, set, go!

A worldwide future

What’s next for Pat? The opening of resqme Europe, located in France is something she’s looking forward to: “I’m very excited for the opening of our European sister company because it will make it so much easier for our European customers to get our tools!” She’s also looking forward to get there to meet our German partners. “Europe is very central, on a spatial and political scale. We have our part to play to increase everyone’s everyday safety there!” On a personal side, she is training for the Ironman Italy, trying to qualify for the World championship in Kona: “It takes most of my time!” When we look at the 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit, we understand why!

+ Patricia was recently interviewed on a local Santa Barbara TV channel. Watch her demonstrate our tool and go more in details about the mental relationship between sport and life in this video.

How to prevent the 10 most common car problems

Driving is a very sensitive skill that should always be done with extreme keenness. It is estimated that about 1.3 million people lose their lives every year due to car accidents. That is a whooping 3200 deaths every single day. Absent-minded driving aka distracted driving pose a deadly impact to passengers and pedestrians alike. With more and more people texting while driving, its no wonder car accidents are on the rise.

Moreover, the number of pedestrians killed has increased over the past few years. Research shows that a pedestrian gets injured every 7.5 minutes and 1 pedestrian dies every 1.6 hours. Distracted driving results in more car accidents.

Keep your phone off as you drive

Car fatalities from the use of smartphones have increased by 47% since 2010. Additionally, smart phone use has been responsible for a 40% increase in injuries. You should minimize your phone usage to the answering important calls only.

1 2

Do not drive under influence of alcohol

Alcohol causes hallucinations and poor judgement. Drivers under the influence of alcohol are prone to distraction hence causing fatalities.

Focus while driving

Most people drive subconsciously. However, driving should be an active process and should involve all the senses.

Attend driving lessons

Every person aspiring to drive should attend a driving lesson to ensure that they are competent enough and can confidently drive on the roads.

Limit the number of your passengers

As a driver, you should ensure that you only carry the recommended number of passengers. Novice drivers should however not be allowed to carry a large number of passengers or goods. Besides, teenage passengers are very distractive hence teenage drives should be more careful if they carry fellow teenagers.

Eat before or after driving

Do not eat as you drive. Though eating while walking or driving may appear to be a time saving mechanism, it does not help in preventing distractions.

The overall effort in preventing distractions on the road is to ensure that both you and your passengers are safe. Multitasking is not always possible for everyone. This therefore means that distracted drivers will often shift their attention intermittently. Road carnages are a detriment that should be eliminated by every individual. Besides, if you have any question or wish to report an issue, contact a car accident attorney. Failing to focus while driving and getting distracted is the lead cause of road crashes.
